Survey Versioning

ResponseDock uses mandatory versioning to ensure that historical responses always stay aligned with the exact survey that was answered — even after you've edited or restructured the survey.

How Versioning Works

  • A new survey starts as a draft (no version yet).
  • The first Publish action creates Version 1 and sets the survey to online.
  • While the survey is live, edits in the builder create a new draft version.
  • Publishing that draft creates Version 2 and makes it the active version.
  • Every Response stores the surveyVersionId it was answered against.

Live Editing Warning

When you open a live survey in the builder, a yellow banner appears at the top:

This survey is online. Changes will create a new version and will not modify existing responses.

Proceed confidently — your edits won't break existing response data.

Analytics & Version Filtering

In the analytics view you can filter responses by version to compare how results changed after you modified questions.

API Behavior

When you GET /surveys/:id, the response includes the currently active version ID. Use GET /surveys/:id/versions to list all versions and their publish dates.

Rollback

To revert to a previous version, open the survey in the builder, open the version history panel, and click Restore next to the desired version. This creates a new version identical to the restored one and publishes it immediately.
